Christy Cornell Laurie Anne Exactly! I am sickened to hear these pitters justify this attack like that. The reality of the situation is that it WASN'T an actual threat. This proves that pitters are moving the goal posts of what is acceptable from domesticated dogs. I guess we shouldn't be surprised by this, they've been justifying children being killed all along with their accusations that the child did something to provoke a killer dog. The dog KNEW Mr. Higgenbotham because he lived in the upper part of the residence. The victim wasn't an assailant, thief, stranger, or someone that the dog didn't see often. If the pitters can speculate, i can too... What if it had been the female (hid upstairs) who was present at the residence? What if Mr. Wallace was married with kids and it had been a resident child/spouse who had started CPR? This is justification of a fatal attack on a non-abusive person is beyond belief.

The are considering releasing the dog that killed two people.
te. Doug talked about his first encounter with her. When he arrived she was behind an entertaintment stand in a bedroom. She never put up a fight with him and he walked her out to his truck. He says she is eating and does growl occassionally likely due to fear. She does not act aggressive. He stated if a family member wants her he would most definitely consider releasing her to them. Rescues have also contacted him something he too is not oppossed of. With that a paper releasing them from liability would need signed of course. There is no time frame on her fate and he isnt looking to rush family as they have been through a lot. Sheba has not had any encounters in the past as far as aggression goes. Before this she was a very happy loved dog whose world was shattered in a matter of minutes. As far as the victim it was noted he did not appear to have been mauled..he had 2 bite wounds(unsure location). This just leaves me to wonder if she was the cause of death ultimately. Thats were the autopsy results will come in. I feel hopeful for Sheba. I am also very sad for the families. Her owners loved her dearly and I believe they would want her to continue her life. People say dogs shouldnt be for protection, but you can nor will you ever rid a dog of their natural born instinct to protect. The bully breeds are one of the most people pleasing, protective dogs. She can not help nor comprehend a real threat to a life saving measure. All she knew was something bad was happening and she needed to do something. Had this been an intruder or a crime we would be here saying what a hero she is and giving her a medal. I feel hopeful and just hope and pray Sheba will experience the happiness she had before all this happened. Huge thanks to Steve and Doug for sharing the story on her.

  • Christy Cornell Beth Patsch, the person who claimed the attack was caused by the victim attempting CPR, is certainly in killer pitbull Sheba's corner. How does Beth Patsch know this supposed CPR attempt was what triggered the attack unless she witnessed it or has been informed by the ME ? Was she even present during the attack? From what I've read- NO, she wasn't, so how is this CPR trigger attack not just her biased speculations?

If she loves this dog so much, why isn't she volunteering to adopt him?

  • Christy Cornell If the dog thought its owner was being attacked then the appropriate thing for a normal domesticated dog to do is growl, bark, or even a non-lethal bite or two might be ok (the dog retreats or allows the victim to retreat). If a protective dog does those things and it's really a case of someone touching the unresponsive dog owner in a way that the dog could be easily perceive as an attack then I could understand. I could excuse the dog just this once, but I'd still have it assessed for temperment and work with it so that it wouldn't be so reactive. But, if this victim died from a mauling or if the mauling was so severe/prolonged that it caused him to lose a lot of blood (or overly stressed his heart) and go into cardiac arrest, then it seems to me that the dog kept attacking and didn't let the person retreat. A sustained attack or a brief attack that is at the level of a lethal mauling is not justified.

This Tamara L. person is claiming it wasn't a mauling and there were only two bites. Maybe she talked to the AC officer, but I have NOT seen where the police or ME has stated anything like what she said. If this victim has a bite or two that isn't bad and didn't cause him to lose blood enough to stress his heart, I could see about possibly sparing the dog, but if this is a fatal mauling or a mauling so prolonged or severe that it stressed the victim's heart, Sheba should be euthanized.

  • Christy Cornell Yeah, Cam Bellamy, but why should they take that growling seriously? She's just a little fear aggressive. Probably the worst she'd do is give ya a little nip. It's not like she could overreact from her fearfulness ( like if she feared her owner was in danger). It's not like Sheba's killed anyone!

Sorry for any confusion, if I caused you to mention food, Sue Palen .My bad!

This is a very sad case. I wonder why the newspaper said when they arrived the dog was mauling the victim, but now they are saying 2 bites? I love dogs so I'm not saying I favor one or the other on

  • Laurie Anne We are assured its not so bad, because it was just 2 bites, and not a mauling. And didn't they say the bites were on the arms? How do two bites lead to death? So, now we have a man-killer, that rescue angels are trying desperately to save. The AC and PD seem totally supportive of the idea that a man-killing dog should be unconditionally released to another home. Mickey the Pit Bull was ordered to have his teeth removed and incarcerated for "just" mauling a little boy's face, and it seems harsh by comparison!

  • Laurie Anne Has a man-killer ever LEGALLY been adopted out to another home, that anyone here is aware of? The rescue angels all fight over who gets the prestigious mauler. There is no greater prestige than rescuing a proven attacker! Imagine how worked up they are going to get about having a chance at adopting a man-killer! Step over, Mickey! Sheba is now America's Most Desirable Pit Bull! She has proven she will kill to protect her owner! It was a friend of the owner this time, but that's just a minor point. What really matters is that she is hero pit bull material, and might protect her family from attack from a real bad guy who means harm next time. She will have learned the difference by then, I guess. Plus, her whole world was turned upside down by killing one man, or more - the poor thing! Two men are dead, but she was cowering behind an entertainment console, which is far worse than being killed. The closest major city to Wheeling is Pittsburgh - will one of the all breed shelters take him in, or will one of the local adoption groups seek to take him in?

  • Laurie Anne It looks like Sheba is going to be someone's neighbor again. Personally, I would be appalled if a known man-killer moved next door, but there appear to be folks who are willing to give this poor misunderstood wigglebutt another chance. We can't assume she will kill again - that would be racist (/sarcasm). I think it is likely that sane people outnumber wackos enough to cause the "all life is precious, except if a pit bull kills it, in which case its okay because they provoked the adorable wigglebutt")to probably have to change her name and disguise her past. "Dog Lovers" might be okay with having a man-killer living next door....

  • Laurie Anne Seriously - why are people agonizing over the life of a dog that killed an innocent man? Why the urgency in getting Sheba a new home? The Dalai Lama, and probably St Francis himself, would not be rehoming a man-killer. Seems to be a new secular religion, valuing animal life over human life. I wonder if this ever happened before in history, or if this is another "in the past 5 years" eternal truth.
